Staying Safe While Doing Your Online Banking

AVG answers the question: How safe is online business banking? Auckland, 3 March 2010 – While businesses and consumers alike are attracted by the flexibility of online banking, it should be noted that this great tool carries inherent security risks. Consider that FBI Director, Robert Mueller, recently announced that he had been banned by his wife from using his online banking service after he nearly became the victim of a phishing scam.

Muller’s wife was probably right to be concerned. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) research found 6 million people are exposed to scams and frauds during any given year, with over 800,000 falling victim in some way. The financial losses are of major concern – with almost $1 billion in losses.

Lloyd Borrett, AVG (AU/NZ) Marketing Manager said, “The use of the Internet by cyber-criminals to mass-market fraudulent schemes is unprecedented and increasing rapidly. Given that so many of these criminal perpetrators are not within easy reach of Australian law enforcement agencies, all businesses need to be more vigilant than ever, especially while banking online.”

For businesses, the threats posed by online banking may be more acute given the dangers associated with so-called “insider threats”. IT security experts have long contended that a company’s own staff pose a bigger criminal threat than external criminals. While this may no longer be accurate given the entry of organised criminal gangs in the mid-nineties and the resulting increasing sophistication of cyber-criminals, online banking certainly provides a new channel for these internal or external criminals to steal money or confidential information.

Recent research by AVG revealed that the number of financial transactions conducted over the Internet are on the rise, with 85 percent of people now using the Internet for shopping, and over two-thirds doing their banking online. The research also showed that fears about cyber theft are rising too, with 43 percent of those surveyed saying they felt more susceptible to cyber theft than burglary, assault or robbery.

Fears over cyber-crime are to be expected in the digital age, especially as 3 in 10 people have experienced fraudulent behaviour over the Internet, including fraudulent emails, credit card fraud, and unauthorised bank transfers. Despite these concerns, the AVG survey also revealed that approximately 30 percent of respondents did not feel they were taking adequate steps to protect themselves from fraudulent online activity.

Banks could also be doing more. For example, the use of drop-down menus as part of the log-in process can help defeat key-logging software. Criminals use this software to record key-strokes. Drop-down menus cannot be recorded in this way as they are activated by the user’s mouse. Other approaches include external devices sent to customers which generate unique pin-numbers each time the user accesses their account.

There is general awareness of at least some of the risks associated with online banking, and knowledge of some of the tools that can be employed to combat it. The awareness and knowledge must grow on both sides and, most importantly, once gained should not be ignored. What you need to know to protect your business against Cyber Theft

Q. What is Cyber Theft?

A. Cyber Theft is the term we use to describe financial loss or identity fraud that could happen to you as a direct result of entering personal information while on the Internet usually for the purposes of banking, shopping or gaming.

Q. How can I prevent Cyber Theft happening to me?

A. There are a number of steps you can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of Cyber Theft including:

1. Check that an Online Internet payment system has a padlock symbol displayed in either the bottom right-hand corner of the web page or in the address bar. 2. Never access an online payment system via a link contained in an email. 3. Never send money to people or organisations that you have not heard of. 4. Check the Electronic Money Association website – www.e-ma.org. 5. Make sure your Internet security software gives you comprehensive protection. Q. I already have antivirus software on my PC – does that mean I’m protected?

A. Not necessarily. Anti-virus software is designed to keep your computer protected against known viruses and spot unusual behaviour patterns that indicate unknown viruses – many of them are simply trying to disrupt or harm your computer in some way, and spread themselves to other computers. Most often they are not created for the purposes of committing Cyber Theft. The most common ways to commit Cyber Theft is with spyware or phishing.

Q. What is spyware?

Spyware ranges from adware (a nuisance, but comparatively low risk) through to surveillance software (scans your hard disk for private data such as credit card numbers, passwords and other personal information). This type of spyware then sends this information back over the Internet to the criminals that made the spyware.

Q. How does spyware get on to my computer?

A. Your computer is most at risk from infection from spyware if you use file sharing applications such as music or video sharing software or web sites.

Often a fraudster will send an email containing malware (or malicious software) to an unsuspecting computer user. Once the email has been opened the malware will be automatically downloaded onto their computer. Malware can also be contained in downloads from the internet. Depending upon the type of malware it may enable the fraudster to capture personal information and passwords.

Q. How can I tell if I have spyware?

A. The whole point of spying on people is to remain undetected so they can collect referral fees on adverts or by exploiting and making use of stolen information like credit card numbers.

The very worst kinds of spyware are designed to operate in stealth mode in order to avoid being discovered. Unprotected PCs can often have several different types of spyware running at the same time. One visible sign that your computer may be infected with spyware is that it starts to become slow or prone to crashing. This is because spyware applications interfere with the computer’s operating system making it slow and unreliable.

If you have antispyware software installed on your PC, or a security suite that includes antispyware such as AVG Internet Security Business Edition, you can both scan for and isolate spyware that may be on your PC, stopping it from relaying information back to its fraudulent creator.

A. The AVG study shows that Cyber Theft is one of the most feared crimes with people believing themselves more susceptible to online fraudsters than any other criminals. If you’re not careful, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Marketing campaigns can be the undoing of your internet business. There are so many people that launch into an PPC campaign without really knowing what they are doing. The big downside to this is that you end up spending hundreds to thousands of dollars advertising your product or website with very little return.

All of the advertising that you see in relation to MSN, Yahoo and Google advertising is that it’s a simple process and easy to make money. Well, that can be true and if you get the campaign settings, keywords and target market right then PPC campaigns are the quickest way to make money online. But, if you don’t? Spend, spend, spend and a low conversion rate.

You may think that you have an awesome product that will be very easy to sell. The only thing with finding a product that you like is that you may be the only one who likes it. Clickbank is an ideal marketplace to monitor products, their popularity and the number of other affiliate marketers that are also promoting the product. This is called gravity. If there is a large number of affiliates promoting the product then it is more than likely to be profitable.

When you are starting out with a PPC campaign, it’s important to know the size of your intended target market. How many other people are selling the product you like? Is the market saturated? For example, take the “make money” niche. It’s huge. There are literally thousands of internet marketers pumping products that will teach you or help you to make money online.

All you have to do is start researching “make money” in the google keywords tool to see that there are billions of searches for this keyword monthly. Well, it’s not surprising given that there is a recession – the point is, make sure that you can still find a profitable product in a niche that still gives you room to move with low competition buying keywords. By buying keywords, I mean keywords that will convert into sales.

It doesn’t hurt to spy a little either. Providing you aren’t copying another persons adcopy, it’s good research to pay attention to what others are doing in your niche. Set up a spreadsheet (or any other recording method you prefer) and monitor which ads in your chosen niche are lasting the distance and which ads are up one week and gone the next. If the ad is performing, it will be sustainable and profitable. Try to emulate those successful ads by creating an ad that elicits similar emotion and action from your chosen market.

Before you choose to promote any product, don’t forget to look closely on the return rate. If the product is a high seller but frequently returned, it will be a great limiting factor when it comes to your bottom line. A high return rate does not necessarily mean that the product won’t be profitable but it is certainly an indicator that you should do some further research. Google search is always good to get an idea but there are also survey sites where you can ask members questions about the product which will be more relevant.

Here are some quick tips for when you start your campaign:

Make sure the keywords you choose are relevant to your target market, adcopy and sales page
Check the performance of your campaign (daily at least) to see if you need to add or delete non performing keywords
Target your campaign to your customers wants
Cap your daily budget
Run a couple of campaigns at once to benchmark for campaign performance
Run two-three ads in one adgroup as a benchmark for ad perfomance
Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from support staff if you see something isn’t working

PPC campaigns are profitable and effective if you do your research and keep a close eye on performance data. Be creative and adverturous. Would you click on your ad?

How do you evaluate competition for SEO?

If you run an advertising campaign with the wrong keywords, you will get frustrated, spend loads of money you don’t need to spend and be disappointed by the lack of impressions you get, the low click-through-rate and a lack of conversions.

Getting the right keyword in the beginning will save that so it’s important to spend some time analysing and assessing your keywords as well as the amount of competition out there. Obviously, “make money” is going to be a very difficult market to break into with just those keywords. So, you need to take some steps to assess your competition and to find the most specific keywords for your product.

The goal of finding the right keywords initially is to rank in google. Page rank in google means where your ad or article will show up in the search results. Ideally, you want to get listed on the first page of search results.

Some steps to take when you are assessing your keywords:

Go to https://adwords.google.co.uk/select/KeywordToolExternal
Check to see if there is low advertiser competition and less than 30,000 search results each month
Then do a Google search and type in the keywords that you are interested in. Make sure you search in quotes. For example: “Make Money”
Where google lists the search results “Results 1-10 of xxx,xxx” on the right hand of the screen, check to see if the search result is less than 100,000. If it is, continue using this keyword (because it is likely a good one). If it is anything more than 100,000 then choose a different keyword. Chances are the competition is too high with anything over 100,000
Do another keyword search with your keyword phrase in quotes again and see if those search results are less than 1,250. If the answer is yes, get your ad campaign started.

Pay per click advertising and SEO isn’t really a clear science but if you use some basic techniques consistently and change anything within your campaign that doesn’t appear to be working then you will eventually improve your CTR and conversions.

Don’t Give Up – Give Everything!

I read this post today that really motivated me. I belong to a forum/e-learning site called Wealthy Affiliate University and today I read a post from another members blog that was so motivational, it made me want to write this post.

It’s really tempting to give up in this business. Knowing that others are making loads of money when you’re struggling to make a sale is a real pain in the butt! But, what’t the most important thing here? To succeed that’s what!

Sitting around feeling the lack of motivation or that everything is getting on top of you is normal. Sometimes learning the ins and outs of internet marketing is frustrating (especially if you are doing it all yourself), a real trial and a hard slog. You will question why you’re doing this, you will question whether you have the nouse to succeed, the will or the determination. All of those things are okay.

What’s not okay is giving up.

It’s really not worthwhile sitting around beating yourself up because of your failures. Mistakes should be seen as a really good learning curve or an opportunity to do things differently. Don’t make your mistakes all important. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to your desk!

Figure out what’s important to you and why you want to be in this fabulous work from home business that you’re creating. Write down the things that pop into your mind and slap them up on the wall in front of you so you can see them every day. Do what ever it takes to stay focused and dream up new and more creative ways of making your business successful on the internet.

Set some high fallooting goals as well as a day to day plan that will move you closer to your bigger goals.

Always remember that every business peaks and troughs. Dwell on the peaks and not on the troughs and before you know it you’ll have a striving long-term sustainable business to be proud of.

Spammer given $210,000 penalty

A Queensland man who headed up one of the world’s largest online spamming operations has been given a $210,000 penalty.

New Zealand-born Lance Thomas Atkinson, 26, admitted to being involved in a large-scale spam sending operation that delivered emails to internet users all over the world.

The court heard Atkinson’s spamming racked up as many as 140,000 reports in Australia alone.

Both his defence lawyer and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) last week submitted to the Federal Court in Brisbane that he should receive a $210,000 pecuniary penalty for the offences.

On Tuesday, Justice Andrew Greenwood agreed with the proposed penalty, adding a seven year injunction from sending spam and ordering Atkinson not to knowingly associate with any person involved in sending spam.

In his judgment, Justice Greenwood labelled the spam as “annoying and irritating”.

“It requires computers to constantly update spam filters,” he said.

However, he noted Atkinson had cooperated with the court.

The court had previously heard the spamming occurred over a 14 month period and that Atkinson, from the Sunshine Coast, was involved in recruiting spammers.

Some of the less explicit email subject lines he used included “2 pills a day got me an extra 2 inches” and “Any bigger and I would be in a circus”.

It has previously been reported that Atkinson, who has already been fined $16 million by US authorities and was also fined in New Zealand, had a computer system capable of sending up to 10 billion emails per day.

In order for electronic advertising messages not to be considered spam, a company needs permission to send a message, state who they are and offer the opportunity to unsubscribe.

Under the Spam Act, individuals found guilty can only receive civil penalty provisions and not jail time.

You could have the best website on the planet – informative, helpful, full of free resources and clearly something that you are passionate about. But…..

Who sees it? Website optimisation is really the focus of many marketers these days because big search engines like are the ‘in’ group in the playground that basically says whose popular and who isn’t. Whether you like it or not, you have to play the game and make friends with the popular’s to get noticed.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is such a big thing now that companies specialise in providing these services to you in an effort to get your page higher up in the search results. One problem is that it can be really expensive. In my opinion, you are better to know how to do this for yourself for the sake of your long-term business and future websites you may create.

Getting your website listed high up in the search results is one of the most important things you could focus on in order to get noticed. The term that Google uses is Page Rank (PR). You may or may not know the term but you will recognise it. Page rank is like a voting system. The more people that link to your site, the higher your page rank will be.

When you do a search (particularly in Google) you will see the search results and at the bottom of the page the 15-20+ pages showing results for your search. It is unlikely that you will go to the last page to find what you’re looking for. It’s human nature to pick the first up and maybe a couple more to check for relevance but that’s it. You don’t want your website to be on the last page! Get more votes for your page – optimise.

So, what things do you need to do?

There are plenty of ways to do this but there are some key things that you need to know before you charge in and start increasing your links left, right and center.

Don’t create 50 links in one day – aim for one or two max. You’re aiming to get noticed – not to blow the populars out of the water
Try not to enter into too many recipricol links arrangements
Assess the text you are using to define your link

Tips for increasing your backlinks

Write articles and submit them to article sites
Start using twitter, squidoo, hubpages and social media sites
Get links from good sites – meaning, sites that already have a good page rank and are indexed
Provide high quality content on your site
Comment on blogs relevant to your topic (Value added comments – not just self serving comments)
Submit your website to directories

Article marketing is not a new thing – Ezines is massive and within the top 200 sites visited on the planet. For me, writing is my favourite part of working from home and developing an online business. Top internet marketers will recommend that you use some form of article marketing to get the word out about what your business is, what service it provides and to get traffic to your site.

Generally, article marketing sites are free to join but there are some pretty strict rules associated with submitting articles to some sites. It is important to stick to the guidelines or you won’t get your article published and your reputation with the site can be affected. Make sure that your articles are value added for the people reading them. If your article bores you to sobs, re-write it.

As an aside, if you have the cash, there is some really good software out there that can help you to submit your articles to a number of article marketing sites with minimal effort. But, shop around. Prices vary significantly and from what I can see from my research, the benefits you get from any given software is the same for dramatically different prices.

For example:

Article announcer costs $379 USD to purchase. It’s a good product and does what it is supposed to do but Article Post Robot does too and costs $49.95 USD a month for three months. That’s a big price difference.

If you don’t have the money to use paid submitter sites or to purchase the software, you can do this yourself. It is time consuming but if you want free traffic then it’s worth it to take the time. Mix your articles up a bit so that people accessing search results for information that your article holds aren’t disappointed by finding the exact same article somewhere else. I’d be annoyed to read the same article posted somewhere else with exactly the same content – it’s time wasting and definitely not value added for your reader.

These will get you started but if you have a very specific niche market, it would pay to search the article sites out there. There are so many that it would be pretty pointless to list them all here. If you find an article site that is specific to your niche, obviously it would be more beneficial to you, your business and the reader to submit there.
