Amateur blogs – building the best blog for you
I am not going to speak elaborately on what your blog should have. I have always found bullets and paint by the number approaches best for me when learning. If this is talking down to the already initiated, then I apologise in advance. This blog is about keeping everything simple and honest for those who want to get into the internet marketing industry – so I’m sticking to the KISS principle. Keep It Simple!
- Comments – Welcoming comments are a fantastic way to present the opportunity for a dialogue. B-Blogs are an excellent customer feedback tool that should be utilised if you want to profit from your blog. As previously mentioned, comments provide an additional chance to connect with your readers. It’s really only polite to jump into this blog tool.
- Trackbacks – Trackbacks increase your blogs exposure and therefore your products and company as well. By providing a trackback service, people can get back to you for more posts or updates without having to try to contact you directly. When your blog becomes popular then it is likely that a number of other blogs are connecting to yours.
- Categories and Tags – These classify blog searches for ease of navigation on site search. Categories behave the same way on your blog as the do at the local library. Posts are classified into subject matter. For example, business, resources, products, learning resources – the list is endless and specific to your blog. Technorati is a site where potential visitors may find you based upon certain topic searches.
- RSS Feed – I have mentioned this already as an essential tool but in the name of completeness, I have included it here as it is an essential part of your blog. RSS feed stands for Really Simply Syndication and is the feed from your blog sent over the internet and collected by newsreaders and aggregators. In simple words, another tool to pull traffic to your blog.
- Paid blog host – When you are starting out, you are looking for the cheapest options to get started. But, a word of warning. If you are looking to set up a b-blog it is probably more prudent to pay a host for your blog. Paid host services offer unlimited packages to suit your needs. The most important thing about a paid host is that (generally) their technical support is better and often 24/7 as is their host service. Other services may see your blog down while you’re having a nap. That’s not going to make you your fortune. Blog hosts range in price but are generally about $15-$20 per month. This isn’t a lot for your business when you consider how much retail premises cost for a physical shop front.
In terms of style, you should consider:
- Creating a style that meets the needs of your audience
- Establish an open credible tone in your content
- Schedule weekly updates – at least
- Include weblinks of other sites and blogs
- Your posts should be in the ‘first person’
- Focus on the business blog objective
- Maintain an honest, engaging and conversational quality
Remember – Your audience will judge your blog (and possibly you) by the look, style and content on your blog. How do you want to be seen?
